Abstract:

Population growth has led to an increased demand for food in the world. Corn is one of the main cereals used for human consumption directly or indirectly, and the search for increasingly productive cultivars is a challenge for researchers. The aim of this study was to evaluate a semi-exotic maize population through agronomic traits and their metabolic efficiency in the carbon x nitrogen ratio as part of a broader maize breeding program. The experiment was conducted at the Federal University of Goiás, Jataí Regional, with a randomized complete block design in four replications, with 79 half-sib families and one witness. During the culture development period, plant height and ear insertion, stem diameter, Falker chlorophyll index, nitrate reductase activity and total soluble sugars (AST) were determined. After harvesting, ear traits and yield were evaluated. The results were subjected to analysis of variance and their significance was verified by the F test. Pearson correlation coefficients were obtained between all the evaluated characters and the families were grouped by the Scott and Knott grouping test, and by the multivariate analysis. data through Tocher's optimization clustering method. The material presents genetic variability to be worked in future improvement. Five families showed different behavior in carbon x nitrogen ratio.
