Abstract:

The main problem in sugarcane silage is the alcoholic fermentation performed by yeast during the storage period. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of inoculation with Lactobacillus buchneri on the quality of sugarcane silages. A meta-analysis was performed from data from experiments of the last 10 years. Initially, 70 papers were found among articles, theses and dissertations that worked with L. buchneri in sugarcane silages. Studies that did not compare silage inoculated with silage without inoculant or because they did not present measures of variance were discarded. Eight studies were considered for the effect on aerobic stability, twelve for ethanol production, ten for dry matter loss and only four for milk production. Significant difference was found for aerobic stability and ethanol production. There was no difference for dry matter loss and milk yield. The use of additive may decrease overall losses in the production system. It may be necessary to associate more than one strain of L. buchneri or other species of bacteria to confirm other advantages such as the decrease in dry matter losses verified by some authors.
