Abstract:

During the evaluation of the seed lots quality, vigor tests are complementary to the germination test and identify differences in the deterioration degree of the them. For safflower there is little information in relation to these tests. The present research had as objective to establish methodologies for stress tests in order to identify differences between levels of vigor in safflower seed lots. Twelve seed lots were used for evaluate the water content, one thousand seed mass, germination, first germination count and seedlings emergence in field. For the accelerated aging test the traditional and saline methods were used. For this, the seeds were conditioned, in a germination chamber, in the periods of 0, 8, 16, 24, 32 and 48 hours at 42 ° C. In the cold test, the seeds were conditioned in the periods of 0, 3, 5 and 7 days at 10 ° C. Afterwards they were submitted to the germination test, with evaluation of normal seedlings on the 3rd day. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and for comparison of the means was used the Scott-Knott test at 1 and 5% probability. To verify the efficiency of the methodologies, the principal component analysis was realized. The traditional accelerated aging test at 42 °C for 24 hours and the cold test at 10 °C for 7 days are promising for evaluating the physiological quality of safflower seeds.
